LIRA CITY, UGANDA- January 21, 2026 — A tragic hit-and-run road traffic accident has left two individuals dead after a maroon Sino truck collided with a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle at Akia Trading Centre along the Lira–Alebtong Road on Wednesday afternoon.
The Territorial Police at Lira City Central Police Station (CPS) confirmed the incident occurred at approximately 16:00 hours. Preliminary investigations reveal that the unidentified truck, suspected to be a maroon Sino model, was traveling from Lira City toward Alebtong when it veered into the opposite lane. The vehicle struck the motorcycle, registered under plate number UET 193S, head-on. The motorcycle’s rider and passenger succumbed to their injuries at the scene.
“Preliminary inquiry suggests that the driver of the truck lost control of the vehicle, leading to the collision,” stated a police spokesperson. The identities of the victims remain undisclosed pending notification of their next of kin.
According to SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, the PRO North Kyoga Region, a team led by Corporal Ituti Teddy, assisted by Corporal Nansubuga, responded promptly to the crash site. The deceased were transferred to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem examinations, while the motorcycle was towed to Lira City CPS for inspection. The truck, however, fled the scene immediately after the impact and remains at large.
Police have launched an investigation to trace the driver of the suspected vehicle and are appealing to the public for assistance in identifying the truck or its registration details. “Any information leading to the arrest of the driver or the recovery of the vehicle will be met with gratitude,” urged Cpl. Ituti Teddy.
Residents in the area expressed shock at the incident, with many calling for stricter enforcement of road safety measures to prevent such accidents. The Lira–Alebtong Road, a key transport corridor, has seen several traffic incidents in recent years, prompting renewed calls for improved infrastructure and policing.
The police have assured the public that further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.
