119 UPDF Retirees Commended Maj. Gen. Keith Katungyi For Wealth Creation Advice and Patriotism.
PADER, UGANDA-Presiding over the function, on Friday 7th, August 2026, the 5th Infantry Division Commander, Major General Keith Katungyi, extended deep gratitude to the outgoing soldiers on behalf of the Commander-in-Chief (CIC), the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), the Chief of Land Forces (CLC), and the entire army.
Maj Gen Katungyi commended the retirees for exhibiting high discipline and moral integrity throughout their careers. He took the opportunity to offer a stern warning regarding their financial futures, urging them not to squander their gratuity payments.
In his powerful message to the retirees Maj.Gen.Keith Katungyi stated that” I have a quote here that, Retiring is when you stop living at work and start working at living”
“You are getting good money; do not misuse it. Use it for development,” Maj Gen Katungyi stated emphasising the success of the Parish Development Model (PDM), a government initiative introduced by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to uplift the 31% of Ugandans living in subsistence poverty, I want you to use this money wisely for the development of your families and this country,” he added.
He highlighted the unity within the UPDF, noting that the army is now a cohesive force comprised of former combatants from various historical groups, including UNLA, NRA, ADF, West Nile Front, and LRA returnees. He stated that this integration, spearheaded by President Museveni, has created an army that truly belongs to all Ugandans and is currently performing “wonders” in maintaining national security.Maj Gen Katungyi also awarded WO1 Benson Okello (Retired) a cash token of appreciation 1 (one) million Shillings in appreciation of his extraordinary 47 years of service, having joined the army in 1979. The Commander also gifted Private Geoffrey Muhindo a token of appreciation after the soldier composed and performed a moving song dedicated to the retirees.
The 5th Infantry Deputy Division Commander, Colonel Gai Fraser Mpadwa, commended the soldiers for their resilience during the times of war and peace. “You put your duties above family and personal comfort,” Col Mpadwa said. “Your years of service are not in vain; they will remain a lasting legacy.” He concluded his remarks with a tribute to their sacrifice, quoting the famous ballad: “Old soldiers never die, they just fade away.”
Obote Milton the Pader sub- county LC3 chairperson while addressing the gathering, applauded Maj.Gen Katungyi and UPDF fraternity for financial prudence.
The Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Pader, Lomongin Augustine, warned the retirees not to underestimate the power of anybody they meet as they retire and to avoid external influences. “There are people outside waiting to see you waste your money and later turn you into a laughing stock,” he warned.
Akena Alfred, Pader District LC5 Chairperson, who also doubles as the Chairperson of LC5 chairpersons in Acholi sub- region, stated that as local government leaders they have resolved that every household must have at least 1 acre of cassava garden starting next year to ensure food security. He also thanked the UPDF for their exemplary service to the region pledging his commitment to fighting corruption in Pader district, aligning with the President’s recent slogan of “No More Sleep” war on corruption. He also announced a new agricultural directive for the region: He commended the Div commander for playing a peaceful role during the just concluded elections”

He urged the 119 retirees to be productive in term of practicing commeecial agriculture rather than engaging in unproductive work.
Meanwhile RA 137788 WO1 Benard Okello, who worked with Alpha Battallion in the UPDF and the longest-serving retiree (47 years in service) congratulated the 5th Infantry Div. Commander Maj.Gen Keith Katungyi for being a father who guided him and his colleagues properly, and a real patriots as he was offering advice to fellow retirees. “Do not rush to pick your money from the bank and misuse it. Relax and plan for what you will do with it even after 4 months,” he said. Sharing his personal plans, Okello revealed that he intends to invest in goat and chicken farming, noting that he has 14 children and has already built up a 24-room house in Kitgum Matidi at Pawidi parish.
Another retiree WO1 Moses Majeb added a final piece of guidance, urging the veterans to refrain from excessive alcohol consumption and to focus on returning peacefully to their homes and communities to start their new lives.
The 119 retirees were flagged off at the Acholpii 5 Infantry Division Headquarters in Pader District
As the excitement and jubilation from the retirees got to the climax, several diginitaries joined the celebration. In attendance were ; the GISO Pader Sub-County, LC1 chirperson Tyer village Oyat David, Pukor Sub- County LCV Councilor Hon Oyat George Obwoya, senior UPDF officers including brigade commanders, and the retirees.
However, according to Maj. General Keith, senior officers were also receiving their retirement at other Military Barracks such as Bombo and Mbuya , while those from the rank of Brigadier General, to General are being retired at State House Entebbe.
