LIRA, Uganda– Police in Lira City West Division are holding three suspects in connection with a daring daylight robbery in which Shs 11 million was grabbed from a student near Mama Supermarket in Lira City.
The incident occurred on November 5, 2026, at around 11:00am.
The complainant has been identified as Ogwal Francis, 32, a student of Uganda Martyrs University, Ngetta Campus, and resident of Kirombe North ‘B’ Cell, Lira City West Division.
According to police, Ogwal had been sent by his father, Ogwang Bosco, to withdraw money from the bank. He withdrew Shs 20 million from Stanbic Bank, which was received by his brother, Ojok Amos.
He then proceeded to KCB Bank and withdrew Shs 11 million. As he reached Mama Supermarket, three unidentified persons, including a woman travelling in a motor vehicle Reg No. UBR 845U, Toyota Rumion, allegedly grabbed the Shs 11 million and drove off towards Kampala Road.
In a dramatic chase, the complainant ran after the vehicle, dived onto the bonnet, broke the windscreen and held on as he raised an alarm for help.
The vehicle was later intercepted at Otangula Village in Kole District after members of the community followed it. The suspects fled, but the angry community pursued them and arrested a woman suspected to have been hiding in a bush.
She was escorted to Lira City West Division Police for further management. Two other male suspects were later arrested from Aboke, Kole District, and detained at Aboke Police Station pending transfer to Lira City West Division.
Police identified one of the suspects as Ninsiima Prisca, 25, a businesswoman and resident of Rukungiri Town, Ruhama Division, Rukungiri Municipality.
A case file has been registered at Lira City West Division. The scene was visited by police officers led by the Divisional Police Commander, documented by Scene of Crime Officers, and statements recorded from relevant witnesses. A PF3 form was issued to the victim for medical examination.
The motor vehicle, Reg No. UBR 845U, Toyota Rumion, was recovered and towed to the station. It was vandalised by the angry mob. No recovery of the suspected stolen money has been made yet.
North Kyoga Police spokesperson, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, appealed to members of the public to remain vigilant.
“It’s really unfortunate, we suspect they might have got information from someone who was aware about the bank transactions,” Okema said.
“We pledge to follow this matter closely and make sure the money is recovered and suspects face the law,” he added.
