Kampala, Uganda-Ambassador Hon. Nekesa Barbara Oundo, the NRM National Treasure, has called on religious leaders to go beyond spiritual teachings and actively guide their congregations on practical ways to escape poverty.
Speaking as Guest of Honour at the Kazo Seventh-day Adventist Church fundraising dinner held at Hotel Africana yesterday, Nekesa thanked the NRM government and especially President Yoweri Museveni for safeguarding freedom of worship in Uganda.
She noted that in several other countries, certain faiths face severe restrictions and even torture, while Uganda has maintained an open environment for all religions to practice freely.

The diplomat urged church leaders to intensify messages that promote national unity and peaceful coexistence. She warned against sectarianism and tribalism, saying these vices fuel hatred and undermine the social fabric of the country.
Nekesa described Uganda as a God-fearing nation and linked this national character to the country’s ability to overcome major public-health challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and the nodding syndrome that has affected communities in Karamoja.
The fundraising dinner aimed to raise UGX 150 million to acquire adjoining land for church expansion, construct a pastor’s residence, and create adequate parking facilities. The event brought together church members, well-wishers and leaders in a show of support for the growing congregation in Kazo.
Nekesa’s remarks underscored a dual call: that churches remain houses of prayer while also serving as platforms for economic empowerment, social cohesion and national healing.
