Investigation Underway After Devastating Fire Destroys Nine Kiosks in Kamdini, Oyam District.

KAMDINI, UGANDA — January 25, 2026: A devastating fire erupted in Kamdini Town Council’s Township Cell, Western Ward, on January 24, 2026, at approximately 2:30 p.m., destroying nine kiosks and their contents. The incident, reported the following morning by Assistant Superintending Police (ASP) Odong Alfred, Officer-in-Charge of Kamdini Police Station, is under investigation by regional authorities, with suspected links to illegal electrical wiring.

The fire razed nine commercial kiosks, impacting local business owners. Identified victims include Olang Brian, Opio Aron, Akello Betty, Akello Kunta Beatrice, Awor Elizabeth, Aber Gloria, Ayugi Josephine, Umar Bashir, and Oula Dan. The total value of damaged property remains unassessed, as officials await a thorough evaluation. Many of the affected individuals operate small-scale enterprises, with Olang Brian’s kiosk—registered as a mobile money agent—reported as the suspected origin of the blaze.
Suspected Illegal Wiring Under Scrutiny
Preliminary inquiries point to an illegal electricity connection as the probable cause of the fire. ASP Odong Alfred stated that the connection, allegedly originating from Olang Brian’s kiosk, may have sparked the outbreak. However, police emphasized that the final cause has not been conclusively determined, underscoring the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Scene Processed, Witnesses Interrogated
A team of detectives, led by ASP Odong Alfred and supported by Detective Constable Edou Charles of the Scene of Crime Office (SOCO), revisited the site to document evidence. Statements from victims, witnesses, and local residents have been recorded as investigators work to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident. A case (GEF 001/2026) for “Fire Outbreak / Suspected Arson” has been registered at Kamdini Police Station.
Community in Awe, Relief Efforts Unclear
Residents expressed shock at the destruction, with many noting the kiosks as vital hubs for trade in the rural town. Local leaders have yet to announce relief measures, and affected business owners remain uncertain about recovery timelines.
Authorities Urge Caution
The North Kyoga Region Police, represented by Public Relations Officer PJ Okema, has urged the public to avoid speculation and await official updates. “While we suspect illegal wiring, we cannot confirm this until investigations conclude,” said Okema in a statement. “We remain committed to transparency and will share further information as it becomes available.”
