Leku Pilli Clinches NRM Flag for Adjumani West in Tight Contest.

ADJUMANI – Former Adjumani LCV chairman, James Leku Pilli, has won the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag for the vacant Adjumani West parliamentary seat after a highly contested primary.
Leku emerged winner after beating six other contenders in a tight race that was decided on Thursday, September 3, 2026, through lining up in 99 polling stations across the constituency.
According to the official Declaration of Results Form signed by Mr Chandmale Amos, the NRM Electoral Commission Returning Officer for Adjumani, Leku polled 9,336 votes (37.2%) to beat his closest rival, Ben Anyama, who garnered 9,152 votes (36.4%) – a difference of only 184 votes.
“I therefore declare Leku James Pilli who has polled the highest number of votes (9,336) representing 37.2% as the duly elected NRM Flagbearer for Adjumani West Member of Parliament, Adjumani District by-election, 2026,” Chandmale declared at 07:10 pm.
Seven candidates had contested for the flag. They include James Leku Pilli, Ben Anyama, Nixon Owole – a former RDC, Justine Mawadri, Kassim Ali, Daniel Izale and Richard Obuni Madrara.
Mr Kassim Ali, son to the late Gen Moses Ali who was contesting to take over his father’s mantle, cast his vote at Abirichaku village but only managed 96 votes.
Voter turnout was low in some polling stations. At Abirichaku polling station, out of 426 registered voters, only a handful turned up.
Campaigns were dominated by pledges to lobby for the construction of Laropi Bridge on River Nile connecting Adjumani and Moyo districts, rural electrification and poverty alleviation.
The Adjumani West seat fell vacant following the death of Gen Moses Ali on July 18, 2026.
