Isaac Awio, widely known as “Awio Scrapt Dealer,” is rapidly emerging as a financial powerhouse in Lira City, transforming what many consider waste into a multi-million-shilling enterprise.
From his humble beginnings in scrap metal recycling, Awio has not only built a thriving business, including the notable Heaven’s Hotel, but also become a beacon of hope and employment for countless youth in the region.
Awio’s business point, strategically located west of the Lira Bus Park, around Cuka-Atat, Tekulu Ojwina Cell, Lira City West Division, has been a cornerstone of the community for several years.
Mr. Awio, a prominent Lira City businessman, has amassed significant wealth by expertly buying, selling, and recycling scrap materials for cash, positioning himself as a fast-growing financial tycoon.
Speaking to Tayari Reliable News (TRN), on October 27, 2025, Awio, despite appearing tired during the session, shared his simple yet profound business secret: “I buy and sell used iron and metal scrap and earn millions of shillings from it, depending on how many kilograms I’ve bought.”
He strongly encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to consider the scrap industry, emphasizing that used metals and iron products can be easily recycled into income-generating products not just in Lira City, but across Uganda.
Awio’s enterprise has become a vital economic artery for many young people in Lira City and beyond, who have turned to collecting scrap materials as a primary source of income due to limited formal employment opportunities.
He attributes the active involvement of youth to his fair dealings and broad acceptance of diverse metallic backgrounds, purchasing everything from aluminum saucepans, plastics, and used hoes, to steel bars.
“We deal in used scrap metals and also precious metals from minerals across Africa and neighboring countries. We handle copper, steel, used rails, and gold dust,” Awio explained, detailing the extensive range of materials his business encompasses.
This includes used barbed wire, PC and CD scrap, drained batteries, media tape scrap, scrap iron, and brass – as long as the materials are reusable.
Beyond the scrap yard, Awio’s success is visible in his significant investments, most notably the establishment of Heaven’s Hotel.
He is also funding the education of numerous relatives and children through the buoyant proceeds from his recycling business, demonstrating a commitment to community development.
Awio’s own journey, which began with an initial capital of less than UGX 500,000, stands as a powerful testament to the potential of dedication and foresight.
Today, he is considered a rising tycoon in Lira City, earning millions and providing employment to many young people across the Lango sub-region.
Looking ahead, Awio harbors ambitious plans to further expand his empire, with a school and a four-star hotel in Lira City slated as his next major investment projects, all financed through his flourishing scrap business.
Awio’s story not only underscores the immense potential within unconventional businesses but also positions him as a true “business hero” charting a new course for economic empowerment and sustainable development in Lira City.
