Lira City Residents Welcome State‑of‑the‑Art Satellite Laboratory, Commends Dr.Jane for Boosting Regional Health Services.

LIRA , UGANDA – 24 December 2025: The Minister of Health earns praises after a modern satellite laboratory in Lira City has created impacts and results of her hard work on the ground , marking what officials describe as a “strategic milestone” for health service delivery in the Northern region. The facility, equipped with cutting‑edge diagnostic technology, is expected to shorten turnaround times for laboratory tests, improve disease surveillance, and bring high‑quality care closer to the people of Lira and its surrounding districts.
The project was spearheaded by Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, Uganda’s Minister of Health, whose “strategic vision for strategic people at a strategic time” was highlighted in the in many occasions. Dr. Aceng said the laboratory embodies the ministry’s commitment to decentralising health services and strengthening the country’s capacity to respond to emerging health threats.
“Health is wealth,” Dr. Aceng declared to a crowd of health workers, local officials, and community leaders. “By bringing advanced diagnostic capabilities to LiraCity, we are not only improving the health of individuals but also protecting the wellbeing of our entire region.”
What the Laboratory Offers
The satellite lab houses a suite of modern instruments, including:
Automated hematology and biochemistry analyzers that deliver results within minutes.
Real‑time PCR platforms for rapid detection of viral pathogens such as COVID‑19, Ebola, and other emerging diseases.
Molecular diagnostics for HIV, TB, and malaria, facilitating early treatment initiation.
Cold‑chain storage and a robust quality‑assurance system aligned with the Uganda National Laboratory Policy.
Health officials noted that the facility will also serve as a training hub for laboratory technologists from Lira University and nearby colleges, fostering local capacity building.
Impact on the Community
Prior to the lab’s opening, patients from Lira City and neighboring districts often travelled to referral hospitals in Gulu or Kampala for specialized tests, incurring both time and financial costs. The new satellite laboratory is projected to reduce patient waiting times by up to 60 percent and cut transport expenses for thousands of households each year.
Local resident Samuel Ochieng, a father of three, expressed relief at the development. “My youngest child was diagnosed with malaria last month. We had to drive two hours to get the blood test. Now we can get it done here at Lira LRH, and the doctor can start treatment the same day thanking minister Aceng for the initiative. Dr. Aceng, who also serves as a Member of Parliament for the Women’s Representative seat of Lira City, used the platform to appeal to voters to support in the upcoming 2026–2031 term.

Political analysts Aguda Leo note that “Hon Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng has contributed a lot for the development of Lira city. “ Dr Jane has also struggled to establish Regional blood Bank in LRRH,” said Okello Jimmy of Anai Ober ward , a prominent business man.
Health Sector Strategic Plan. Funding for the Lira laboratory was sourced from the national health budget, supplemented by a grant from the Global Fund for Health Systems Strengthening under the supervision of Hon Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng.
“Today we have taken a decisive step toward equitable health access,” Dr. Aceng concluded. “Our goal is to ensure that every Ugandan, no matter where they live, can receive timely, accurate diagnosis and care.”
