Wonyaci Cup Kicks Off with 175 Clans Competing in Lira City.

LIRA CITY , UGANDA – January 4, 2026 -All is set this month as the highly anticipated Wonyaci Cup football tournament is scheduled to kick off on January 19, 2026, George Angolli, the Sports Minister for the Lango Cultural Institution, announced.
In a press briefing, Angolli George who is also the clan leader of Arak-ober confirmed that the grand tournament will see teams from all 175 clans of the Lango sub-region converge at Lira City for a week of intense competition. Preparations are already in full swing, with all participating teams expected to report for registration and briefing on Monday, January 18th and he called for those with photo albums as per the event to submit before the competition day.

“The Wonyaci Cup is more than just a football tournament; it is a celebration of our unity, our spirit, and our talent,” stated Minister Angolli. “We are bringing together 175 clans, representing the rich diversity and strength of the Lango people. This is an opportunity for our youth to showcase their skills and for our communities to come together.”
The competition will be a showcase of local football prowess, with matches played across four different pitches strategically located within Lira City to accommodate the large number of teams and fans expected.
