Lango Paramount Chief Eng Dr Micheal Moses Odongo Okune Urges Peace, Non-Violence Ahead of 2026 General Elections.B

LIRA CITY, UGANDA— January 13,2026: As Uganda braces for the 2026 general elections, the paramount chief of Lango, Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, has issued a clarion call for peace, stability, and respect for the democratic process. Speaking to the media at the Lango Cultural Centre, the cultural leader emphasized the critical need for law and order before, during, and after the polls, warning that election-related violence could jeopardize lives, property, and the region’s democratic foundations.
Security, Politicians Warned Against Complicity: Eng. Dr. Odongo Okune, the Won Nyaci of Lango, stressed that security agencies must act professionally and uphold neutrality. “The safety of citizens and the integrity of the electoral process are paramount,” he said, urging law enforcement to prevent violence, intimidation, and unrest. He warned that any form of election violence would not only endanger public safety but also undermine the constitutional right to a free and fair vote.
For political leaders, the message was clear: refrain from inciting violence or suppressing opponents. “Lango must set an example of a violence-free region during this electoral period,” he asserted. He also reminded political actors that elections, while important, should not foster lasting divisions. “Once the polls end, we must unite to address shared challenges and advance Lango’s development agenda,” he urged.
The paramount chief highlighted the importance of post-election unity, calling for collective efforts to improve education, healthcare, and socio-economic opportunities in Lango. He aligned these goals with President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s poverty eradication initiatives, particularly the four-acre agricultural model aimed at boosting household food security and income.
“The prosperity of Lango depends on collaboration, not conflict,” Dr. Odongo Okune stated, urging security forces to work closely with cultural and religious leaders to ensure peaceful elections without harm to communities.
Prime Minister Echoes Call for Discipline: Prof. Willy Okullo, Lango’s prime minister, echoed the paramount chief’s sentiments, exhorting the region’s citizens to maintain discipline and avoid destructive behavior. Addressing the media at the Lango Cultural Centre, Prof. Okullo emphasized that unity and cooperation with the government are vital for progress.
“We are all sons and daughters of Lango, regardless of political affliation. Let us put aside differences and focus on shared development,” he said, reiterating the importance of social harmony for the Lango ’s future.
