ALEBTONG — Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Geoffrey Okiswa is steering Alebtong District to a stronger response against malaria after securing an implementing partner to roll out larviciding in Abia Sub-county.
Okiswa convened a meeting with the Infectious Diseases Research Collaboration , an organisation working with the Ministry of Health to eliminate malaria in Uganda. Under the partnership, IDRC will use a biochemical method to destroy mosquito larvae in breeding sites in Abia.
New front against malaria
“This is yet another front to fight malaria, besides mosquito nets, IRS, and vaccination,” Okiswa said. He noted that targeting larvae will reduce mosquito numbers and, in turn, cut malaria transmission in the sub-county.
RDC Geoffrey Okiswa said a healthy population is central to the district’s development agenda, which is now being driven by the Parish Development Model , Emyooga, and cattle restocking programmes. “This is the way to go towards a healthy population for socio-economic transformation,” he said.
The meeting drew the LC5 Chairperson, Secretary for Health, Chief Administrative Officer , District Health Officer , and District Health Team , signalling district-wide commitment to the intervention.

Alebtong RDC Geoffrey Okiswa is leading the district’s malaria elimination drive by bringing in Infectious Diseases Research Collaboration to pilot larviciding in Abia Sub-county. He said the intervention, alongside nets, IRS and vaccines, will build a healthy population to advance PDM, Emyooga and cattle restocking.
