Two mechanics die, three injured in gas cylinder explosion in Lira City
LIRA CITY — Two mechanics died on the spot while three other people were injured after a gas cylinder exploded in Ireda Central Park Cell, Lira City.
The incident happened on October 10, 2026, at around 6pm.
The deceased have been identified as Okabo James and one only identified as Daniel. Both were mechanics.
According to police, the two were repairing a motorcycle using a gas cylinder when it exploded, killing them instantly. The explosion happened in a busy market area.
North Kyoga Region police spokesperson, SP PJ Okema, said the incident was reported by Omara Martin, the Defence Secretary of Ireda Central Park Cell.
“A team led by the DPC Lira City East Division visited the scene. Statements were recorded from witnesses,” Okema said.
He said one of the deceased was dismembered while the other sustained severe head injuries. A fragment from the cylinder hit a stationary trailer, registration number UA 732DX, damaging its bumper and windscreen.
The bodies were taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem while the injured were taken to the same facility for treatment.
Police said a case file has been opened and investigations are ongoing to establish the exact cause of the explosion.
