KAMPALA— Lira City West Member of Parliament, Hon. Shedrick Obong Eyit, on Thursday, 22nd October 2026, put the Ministry of Health on the spot over the persistent stock-out of essential medicines in public hospitals.
Raising a Matter of National Importance during the 11th Sitting of the 2nd Meeting of the 1st Session of the 12th Parliament, Hon. Obong Eyit questioned why hospitals continue to run without drugs when billions are being spent to destroy expired ones.
He quoted the Auditor General’s Report for the Financial Year 2024/2025, which indicates that the National Medical Stores (NMS) spent a staggering UGX 3.68 Billion to destroy expired drugs.

“When you visit our hospitals, they have always experienced drug stock-outs. What is the Ministry doing to mitigate drug stock-outs in our hospitals?” Hon. Obong asked Parliament.
The legislator expressed concern that taxpayers’ money is being wasted on destroying drugs worth millions while ordinary Ugandans are denied treatment due to lack of medicines in health facilities.
In response, the State Minister for Health, Hon. Anifa Kawooya, took note of the matter and assured the Speaker and Hon. Obong that government will respond comprehensively on Tuesday with actual facts.
Hon. Shedrick Obong Eyit has been at the forefront of raising critical national issues both on the floor of Parliament during plenary and in Parliamentary committee meetings, cementing his reputation as a vocal voice for Lango and the nation.
