LIRA CITY, UGANDA – In a bold political move that is reshaping the landscape of the upcoming 2026 general elections, Hon. Awor Sarah Angweri, the current female workers’ representative in the Lira City Council, has officially entered the mayoral race, setting the stage for a historic contest where she is the sole woman among nine nominated candidates.
Undeterred by the crowded field of eight male opponents, Hon. Angweri has declared her unwavering commitment to emerge victorious and bring what she calls a new era of compassionate and effective leadership to Lira City. “Let me repeat, as long as I am in Lira city, no one will suffer under my leadership,” she stated emphatically during her campaign.
Her entry into the race places her directly against established political figures, including the incumbent Mayor, Sam Atul, whom she has vowed to replace. Also in the running is the Mayor of Lira City East Division, Mr. Okello George Ayoo, who is contesting as an Independent candidate after losing in the UPC party primaries.
Explaining her decision to run as an Independent candidate, Hon. Angweri cited internal party divisions and a desire to serve the people of Lira without partisan constraints. “I was disappointed by some bad leadership from some of her fellow leaders,” she revealed, underscoring her motivation to transcend political lines and work for all citizens.
The mayoral hopeful brings a proven track record of advocacy to the table. Her tenure has been notably marked by a fierce dedication to women’s empowerment, improving the welfare of workers, and being a vocal champion for the marginalized and voiceless within the city of Lira and Lango Sub-region region.
Outlining her key agenda for the 2026-2031 term, Hon. Angweri placed the rehabilitation of Lira City’s roads at the top of her priorities. Her comprehensive plan also includes enhancing the welfare of city councillors and teachers, supporting market vendors, promoting the local business community, fostering a strong working relationship with the media, and ensuring unwavering accountability in Lira City Council.
She took a moment to express her gratitude to the media—including radio stations, television, and online newspapers and print publications—for covering her events, message and marketing her agenda to the electorate.
The Lira City Independent Electoral Commission has confirmed that nine substantial candidates have now been officially nominated for the mayoral position. As the campaign season are about to begins, all eyes are on Hon. Awor Sarah Angweri, whose fearless candidacy promises a vigorous and issue-focused for all walks of life for the city’s top job.
