Lira, Uganda – November 6, 2025– In the heart of Northern Uganda’s Lira district, 65-year-old Okello James Alele, affectionately known as ‘Okello Mageno,’ has cultivated a thriving enterprise at his Akilo Apiculture Farm, demonstrating how the humble honeybee can generate millions and provide a sustainable livelihood.
Alele’s remarkable journey began modestly in 1979 with just seven log hives. Over more than four decades, his dedication and strategic expansion have seen Akilo Apiculture Farm grow exponentially, now boasting an impressive 112 active hives in Ogur sub-county.

This expansion has translated into significant financial returns. Alele reports generating between 2-3 million Ugandan Shillings (approximately US$6,000-9,000) per harvest. With three to four harvests annually, his total yearly income from honey and other bee products reaches an estimated 15 million shillings (around US$45,000).
Beyond liquid gold, Akilo Apiculture Farm produces a range of valuable bee products, including propolis, beeswax, and royal jelly. Alele meticulously processes and brands all his products himself, which are in high demand across the Lango sub-region and other parts of Northern Uganda. His extensive client base includes schools, supermarkets, hotels, hospitals, and even online customers.
A fervent advocate for apiculture, Alele actively encourages other farmers to embrace beekeeping, highlighting its profitability, sustainability, and crucial role in crop pollination. He serves as a dedicated mentor, sharing his vast knowledge and experience with aspiring young beekeepers, having already trained many in the intricate art of the craft.
Okello James Alele’s success story is a testament to the potential of dedication and strategic farming. His thriving Akilo Apiculture Farm stands as an inspiring example that beekeeping can indeed provide a robust and sustainable livelihood for families in Uganda, proving that sweet success is achievable through hard work and passion.
