LIRA CITY ,UGANDA – In a significant political development signaling a potential shift in Lira City’s leadership, Hon. Sarah Awor Angweri, the incumbent Female Workers Representative, has officially declared her intention to run for the Lira City mayoral seat in the highly competitive 2026-2031 race.
Awor Angweri is set to challenge a crowded field of eight male contenders, making her candidacy a focal point of the election, particularly as many female voters have reportedly vowed to elect a woman this time around.

The ambitious candidate confirmed that she will set the stage for her campaign with a massive launch rally scheduled for November 10, 2025, at Starch Factory B. Awor’s team is currently finalizing a detailed lineup of activities planned for the day ahead of her official first campaign rally.

Speaking to TAYARI NEWS UGANDA, on Thursday 6th, November, 2025 , Hon. Awor detailed her long political journey, which began in 2006 as a youth councilor in the then Lira Municipality, from Starch factory ‘B’ providing her with nearly two decades of political blessing and experience.
Facing fellow politicians like George Okello Ayoo, incumbent Lira city mayor Sam Atul (NRM) and UPC flag bearer Ogwang Mike Veve among others , Awor is positioning herself as a reform-minded leader whose agenda prioritizes transparency and equity.
Awor stated that her key priorities for Lira City include:Accountability and Transparency: Ensuring public funds are managed openly and efficiently.
Equal Distribution of Resources: Guaranteeing fair access to services across all divisions of the city.
Teachers’ Welfare: Improving working conditions and remuneration for educators.
Transparent Recruitment: Establishing clear merit-based processes for civil service jobs.
Developing the Business Community: Implementing policies that foster growth and support local enterprises. The 2026 mayoral race is unique due to the stark gender imbalance, with Awor being the sole female candidate standing against eight men.

This dynamic, however, may work to her advantage. Political observers note that there is palpable momentum among female constituents who are eager to see a woman in charge of the rapidly growing city. Awor’s status as a respected Workers Representative further positions her as a voice for vulnerable communities.
Should she succeed, Hon. Sarah Awor Angweri would make history as the first woman to lead Lira City as its elected mayor, ushering in a new era of governance defined by her promises of robust accountability and community development.
The countdown to her official campaign launch on November 10th, 2025 has begun, setting the stage for what is expected to be one of Lira City’s most hotly contested electoral and mayoral battles.
