Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Launches Five Boreholes to Eradicate Water Scarcity in Lira City

Lira City, Uganda – Hon. Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng Ocero, the Woman Member of Parliament for Lira City and Minister of Health, has once again demonstrated her unwavering commitment to community service by launching a major borehole drilling project aimed at ending persistent water shortages, months ahead of the official 2026 campaign season.
In a proactive move prioritizing public health and sustained development, Dr. Aceng has secured a partnership with Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) to drill five new boreholes in some of the most severely water-stressed communities across Lira City.
The initiative is a crucial component of her comprehensive Water, Hygiene, and Sanitation (WASH) agenda, which the Minister has relentlessly championed alongside her national duties.
The identified beneficiary locations spanning both city divisions include: Awiealem (Cuk Pang Alayo), Te-Okole (Amuca), Agenga, Tedam (Barapwo), and Angapari.
Drilling works officially commenced today at Te-Okole in Amuca, Lira City West Division. The groundbreaking event drew hundreds of jubilant residents who gathered to witness the start of the project. The atmosphere was reportedly filled with immense joy and gratitude as community members hailed Dr. Aceng for her practical and tireless dedication to providing safe and clean water access.

For years, many residents of Lira City have faced acute water scarcity, often forcing women and children to travel long, dangerous distances to secure water, a challenge now set to be mitigated by this intervention.
Since assuming office in 2021, Dr. Aceng has already overseen the drilling of over 40 boreholes across Lira City. This new phase underscores her deeply held belief that “health begins with access to clean water, and water is life.”
This consistent investment in infrastructure has significantly reduced the burden on residents, improved overall community hygiene, and led to a marked reduction in waterborne diseases, strengthening public health outcomes across the constituency.
Community leaders were quick to praise Dr. Aceng’s consistency and hands-on approach. They noted that her tenure has always been characterized by “impact and service beyond politics,” highlighting that her commitment to the community precedes the electoral cycle.
By choosing to act now, before her official campaign kickoff, Dr. Aceng reinforces the message that her leadership aims for sustainable change and tangible results.
As drilling operations continue across the remaining four designated communities, residents remain optimistic that the long-standing challenges of water access that have plagued Lira City will soon become history, proving once again that true leadership is founded on service, compassion, and concrete action.
