LIRA, UGANDA – November 13, 2025: Hon Sarah Awor Angweri, Workers representative in Lira City Council, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of His Highness Yosam Odur Ebii, the revered Lango Paramount Chief (Won Nyaci), who passed away on Monday morning at Lira University Teaching Hospital.
In a condolence message released on Thursday evening, Hon. Awor reflected on her extensive and close cultural relationship with the late Won Nyaci, a connection that began during his election as “Won Nyaci” when she served within the council of the Lango Cultural Foundation (LCF).
She described Mzee Yosam Odur Ebii as a visionary leader whose primary focus was strengthening the Lango Cultural Foundation and fostering unity across the Lango sub-region.
“I am inspired by his resilience, humility, simplicity, and respect for others’ opinion,” Awor stated, emphasizing the profound impact the Won Nyaci had on local governance and heritage preservation.
Hon.Awor detailed several direct encounters that shaped her respect for the cultural leader. She recounted her first direct engagement with him when she followed him to his residence to sign a petition addressed to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) concerning a demonstration advocating for the construction of Akii Bua Olympic stadium.
She also recalled a visit last year alongside Rwot David Onen Acana II when the Won Nyaci, while unwell, shared a reflective moment, telling them that due to his advanced age, he had been made the “king of kings in Uganda.”
Highlighting her dedicated service under his reign, Awor noted her contribution to the amendments of the LCF constitution. Most recently, she was appointed by the late leader as the Deputy Minister for Culture within the Lango Cultural Foundation. Awor also noted a historical moment: “I witnessed his consecration at the old Akii Bua in 2006 when I was a councillor representing the starch factory to the municipal council.”
As the community prepares for the burial of His Highness Yosam Odur, Awor urged the people of the sub-region to uphold the values championed by their departed leader and maintain solidarity.
“Let us unite as a community to pay tribute to our elder and ensure he receives the send-off he deserves,” she said.
Hon. Awor concluded by emphasizing that H.H. Yosam Odur Ebii’s legacy will be marked by his enduring contributions to Lango’s traditional, social, and legal systems. His reign is expected to be particularly remembered for his commitment to fostering unity among the Lango and other tribes in Uganda, and his tireless advocacy for women’s and children’s rights.
