Gulu City to host grand homecoming for (Rtd). Lt. Gen. Charles Otema Awany.

GULU CITY, UGANDAGulu City will on Friday, August 28, 2026 host a grand homecoming celebration for retired Lieutenant General Charles Otema Awany, bringing together leaders, family and well-wishers from across the country.
The event, scheduled for 9:00AM at Kaunda Grounds, is aimed at welcoming home one of Uganda’s distinguished military officers and recognizing his years of dedicated service in the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces – UPDF.

“A celebration of service to the nation”
According to organizers, the homecoming will be more than a ceremony. It will provide a moment of reflection on Gen. Otema Awany’s journey, his contribution to Uganda’s peace and security, and his impact on the communities he served.
“Beyond the celebration, the occasion will serve as a moment of reflection on Gen. Otema Awany’s journey and the impact of his service to the nation,” organizers said in a statement.
Leaders expected:
Government officials, political leaders, military and security personnel, cultural and religious leaders, business communities, professionals and members of the public are expected to attend.
Organizers have called upon Ugandans from all parts of the country to join the people of Acholi in giving the retired general a befitting welcome.
“Tell a friend to tell a friend. Gulu welcomes home a distinguished son of Uganda,” the statement added.
Rtd. Lt. Gen. Charles Otema Awany hails from Acholi Sub-region and is credited for his service in various command roles within the UPDF and the current peace in Northern Uganda.
