ARUA, UGANDA – November 18, 2025 – President Yoweri Museveni has extended his gratitude to the people and local leaders of Obongi District for their support of government initiatives, commending them for moving away from what he termed the “dirty and childish politics” of the opposition.
The President made the remarks during a meeting with a delegation of Obongi religious leaders, elders, and district officials at the State Lodge in Arua recently . The delegation was led by the Woman MP, Hon. Zumura Maneno, and included District Chairperson Haji Abib Buga, Chief Administrative Officer Otim Benson Humphrey, and RDC Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka.
President Museveni expressed his satisfaction that the residents of Obongi have shunned opposition leaders, whom he accused of misleading the population. He credited this shift with enhancing the impact of numerous government-funded programs, which he said are directly contributing to the district’s development.

“I am happy that the people of Obongi have shunned opposition leaders who have been confusing people and enhanced the numerous government funded programs leading to the development of the district,” the President stated.
Reflecting on the creation of the district itself, President Museveni revealed that he granted Obongi district status in the 2019/2020 financial year as an affirmative action measure and vowed to continue championing its development. He emphasized that only the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government possesses the will and capacity to develop the region.
To that end, he announced a slew of new development projects slated for the district:
Energy: Confirmed that funds have been secured to connect the district to the national electricity grid.
Healthcare: The government is in the final stages of elevating the existing Health Centre IV to a full hospital status. Furthermore, the sub-counties of Aliba and Gimara, currently without Health Centre IIIs, will each receive one.
Political Representation: The President announced plans to grant Obongi an additional constituency, increasing its representation in Parliament to three Members of Parliament.
Education: A new technical institute will be established in the district and named in honor of the late Major General Hussein Ada, a celebrated son of Obongi. All sub-counties lacking seed secondary schools will receive one. The President also issued a stern appeal to local leaders to ensure government-aided primary and secondary schools adhere to the policy of charging no fees.
Wealth Creation: Reiterating his commitment to the four-acre model, President Museveni urged residents to actively utilize government-funded wealth creation programs to escape poverty. As direct support for farmers, he pledged to provide the district with a lorry to aid in transporting agricultural produce.
Concluding his address, President Museveni appealed to the voters of Obongi to support him and all NRM flag bearers in the upcoming elections to ensure the continuity of security and development in the district.
“The security and development of Obongi is assured with the NRM government,” he said.
The district religious leaders were led by the Parish Priest St Anthony of Padua Catholic Church Obongi Rev Fr Andama David.
Two district councillors who were voted on FDC ticket were among the hundreds of Obongians who defected from the opposition FDC and NUP to NRM and gave assurance to mobilise votes for President Yoweri Museveni and other NRM flag bearers.
