LIRA , UGANDA – In a bid to promote peace and stability in the Lango sub-region, the paramount Chief (Won Nyaci) of Lango, Eng. Dr. Michael Moses Odongo Okune, on Wednesday met with top security leaders at his residence in Senior Quarters, Lira City. The meeting, attended by key government officials and cultural leaders, aimed to urge the community to remain calm and law-abiding during the upcoming 2026 general elections.
Eng.Dr. Okune, the Paramount Chief of Lango, appealed to the people of Lango to avoid all forms of violence, chaos, and bloodshed, emphasizing the need for peaceful and orderly conduct throughout the electoral period. He expressed his desire to see the community fully prepared to elect leaders for the next five years in a manner that respects the rule of law.

“The current political climate requires close cooperation between security agencies and cultural leaders, particularly in sensitizing the public on peaceful coexistence during campaigns and voting,” Dr. Okune stressed. He also emphasized the importance of unity and reconciliation within the Lango sub-region, calling for peaceful resolution of land disputes and responsible handling of cultural obligations.
The Paramount Chief further noted that the people of Lango expect the government to prioritize key areas such as education, health services, economic development, proper land management, and family unity moving forward. He urged political leaders to work closely with government institutions and cultural authorities to promote development that addresses the real needs of the people.

The meeting was attended by high-ranking officials, including the Commissioner in the Office of the President in charge of RDCs and RCCs in Northern Uganda, Ms. Alice Akello; the Regional Police Commander for the North Kyoga Region, ACP Wesley Nganizi; and the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Lira District, Ms. Lilian Eyal, among others.
The call for peaceful elections comes as the country prepares for the forthcoming polls, with tensions running high in some parts of the country. The meeting is seen as a significant step towards promoting peace and stability in the Lango sub-region, and its success will be closely watched in the coming weeks.

As the electoral period approaches, the people of Lango and the country at large will be looking to their leaders to ensure a peaceful and orderly process. The appeal by Eng.
