LIRA, UGANDA – December 19, 2025 – The Lira District Youth Chairperson, Hon. Sodrick Ogwang, is receiving widespread praise for his effective leadership and hands-on mentorship, which have directly translated into tangible, life-changing projects for numerous youth groups across the district.

The success stories stem from the strategic implementation of the Sustainable Agribusiness for Youth (SAY) projects, facilitated by the AVSI Foundation. Hon. Ogwang played a pivotal coordinating and lobbying role, ensuring that the support reached grassroots youth initiatives with measurable impact.

In an exclusive interview on Friday morning, a visibly passionate Ogwang who is also the current Sub-county Speaker of Awiodyek and the newly elected NRM district youth league chairperson, elaborated on the project’s benefits. “This initiative has moved beyond theory and into practice, equipping our young people with the tools they need to become self-sufficient and contribute to the local economy,” he stated. “We are not just talking about empowerment; we are seeing it happen on the ground.”

The evidence of this success is reflected in the achievements of several supported groups:
Bedi Gen Youth Group (37 members): The group received a significant boost to its agricultural processing capabilities with a maize huller, maize mills, and DK seeds. Further support included 1,000 pineapple seedlings and tarpaulins for improved harvest handling, enhancing both their production and post-harvest quality.

Otyek Foundation (13 members: 8 female, 5 male): Based in Odano and Ayamo villages, Barr Sub-county, this beekeeping group began in 2019 with just eight members using local hives. The intervention from AVSI, lobbied by Ogwang’s office, was transformative. They received 50 modern bee hives, protective gear including gumboots and bee suits, a honey press machine, and essential tools like knives, brushes, gloves, and smokers, catapulting their production capacity.
Alel Youth Farmers Group (30 members): From Alel village, Agali Sub-county, this group initially focused on horticulture with support from GOAL. Under Chairperson Ogwang’s tenure, they received further backing through AVSI, which included 18 improved piglets, a maize huller machine, and animal feeds, effectively diversifying their income streams and adding value to their produce.

Beyond these groups, Hon. Ogwang’s tenure has also seen the training of more youth in Animal Community Health, a critical skill in a predominantly agricultural district. These trainees were subsequently supported with booster kits valued at 2 million Ugandan shillings each, enabling them to start their own ventures and serve their communities.
Local community leaders and beneficiaries have commended Hon. Ogwang for his proactive and results-driven approach. They credit his ability to effectively liaise with development partners like AVSI as a key factor in bridging the gap between opportunity and implementation, ensuring that youth empowerment in Lira District is not just a slogan, but a reality.
Hon.Sodrick Ogwang ,the former Lira district youth chairperson and Aspirant for Directly elected councillor of Awiodyek Sub-County, is a vibrant leader who can serve deleigently at any position once given the mandate by the electorate.
