President Museveni Offers Shs 5 Million in Condolences to Family of Accident Victim Jasper Okori in Lira District.

Lira District, January 9, 2026 — President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has extended heartfelt condolences to the family of Okori Jasper, a National Resistance Movement (NRM) supporter who tragically lost his life in a road accident on January 8, 2026. The President has offered a total of Over Shs 40 million in financial support—Shs 5 million to the bereaved family and Shs 1 million each to other victims of the accident.
Jasper Okori, a 42-year-old father of five and husband to Harriet Okori, died following a fatal crash that occurred after he attended a campaign rally addressed by President Museveni at the Golf Course in Lira City. He was born on November 22, 1984, and passed away on January 8, 2026.
The condolence message and financial assistance were delivered on behalf of the President by Dr. Akello Alice Opio, Commissioner in charge of RDCs in Northern Uganda, at the deceased’s ancestral home in Amiabil Cell, Angolocom Ward, Agweng Town Council, Erute North County, Lira District.
Addressing mourners during the burial ceremony, Dr. Akello Alice Opio stated that President Museveni deeply regretted not being able to attend the funeral in person due to official commitments but urged the family and community to remain united in the face of the tragedy.
“The fountain of honour has called upon all family members to stand together, support the widow, and ensure she is not chased away or deprived of her rightful inheritance,” Dr. Opio said, reading from the President’s message.
She commended the solidarity shown by NRM members and supporters across Lira District and emphasized the President’s call for peace and compassion during this difficult time.
The Shs 5 million condolence was handed over to the widow, Harriet Okori, who expressed profound gratitude to the President for his generosity.
“I sincerely thank His Excellency President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for this kind gesture. It comes at a time when we are deeply grieving and facing uncertain times. I pray that God blesses him abundantly,” she said.
Harriet also acknowledged the additional Shs 1 million each donated by Maj. Gen. Keith Katungyi, Commander of the 5th Division, and Hon.GCW Denis Hamson Obua who doubles as the NRM National Vice chairperson and also the serving MP for Ajuri constituency, Alebtong District , all of which were delivered by Dr. Akello Alice Opio during the burial rites.
David Opio Apap, clan head of the Oromoagwatawil clan, confirmed receiving news of the accident on the morning of January 8th and rushing to Apoka police traffic point, where he obtained details of the vehicle involved. He praised Dr. Patrick Olet for providing transport to ferry NRM supporters to the rally and commended Dr. Akello Alice Opio for swiftly delivering the President’s condolences.
“Dr. Olet gave us vehicles to ensure supporters reached the rally point safely. We regret what happened, but we appreciate the swift response from leadership,” Opio said, urging a peaceful resolution to any arising concerns.
Dr. Patrick Olet, who had provided some of his personal vehicles used to transport supporters, expressed sorrow over the incident. He clarified that the vehicle owner whose vehicle was involved in an accident , did not intend for any harm to occur and called on the public to support the grieving family.
“In solidarity, I will admit two of Okori Jasper’s children to Gracious Nursery and Primary School in Lira City, where they will receive free education,” Dr. Olet pledged, highlighting that children of prominent local leaders, including Lira LCV Okello Orik and Woman MP Auma Agness Linda, also study at his institution.
Lira District Woman MP, Hon. Auma Agness Linda, who doubles as Chairperson of NRM party in Lira District, stressed that the tragic accident should not be politicized or blamed on the NRM party.
“The NRM has stood with this family—from burial arrangements to financial support. We will continue to advocate for further assistance,” she said, applauding NRM supporters for their unity and turnout during the burial.
Lira LCV Chairperson RCM Okello Orik, representing Lira District Local Government, urged the family to place their trust in God.
“This was an accident, not a crime. Let us surrender everything to God, who gives and takes life. Let peace reign among us,” he said.
The burial ceremony, held at Agweng town council, by Agweng Catholic Parish, was led in prayer by Father Jacob Ray Komakech and Aron Ojok, Curet of the parish, who called for healing and comfort for the bereaved family.
As the community mourns the loss of Jasper Okori, the gestures of support from national and local leaders underscore a message of unity, compassion, and shared responsibility in times of tragedy.
Commissioner Dr. Akello Alice Opio was accampanied by Lira Resident District commissioner Eyal Lillian, DRDC Abang Molly among others.
