FDC Suffers Crushing Defeat in Obongi Local Council 3 Elections
Obongi, Uganda – February 6, 2026 – The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party has been defeated in most sub counties in the recently concluded Local Council 3 elections in Obongi, with the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearers emerging victorious in almost all sub-counties.
In a shocking outcome, the FDC, whose Vice President for Northern Uganda, Kaps Fungaroo, hails from Obongi, managed to secure only one chairperson position, with the NRM sweeping the remaining seats by a landslide margin of over 90%.
In Ewafa Sub-county, Sugu Akirabu of the NRM won with 1,125 votes, defeating FDC’s Awuga, who garnered 888 votes. Similarly, in Aliba sub-county, Okua Majid of the NRM secured 1,201 votes, trouncing independent candidate Anguyo Emmanuel, who managed a mere 294 votes.

The NRM’s dominance was further evident in Itula sub-county, where Sele Isaack Nicholas defeated FDC’s Obulejo Christopher, despite allegations that the FDC had invested heavily in the campaign, pumping in millions of shillings.
In Gimara sub-county, NRM-leaning independent candidate Lomo George emerged victorious, with the FDC candidate mustering a paltry 69 votes. Meanwhile, in Palorinya subcounty, another NRM independent leaning candidate, Erwaga Luke, won the chairperson position, as the FDC failed to field a candidate.
The humiliating defeat of the FDC in the LC 3 elections in Obongi has been interpreted as a significant blow to the party’s influence in the district, which was once considered an FDC stronghold. The outcome has sparked concerns about the party’s viability and ability to regain its footing in the region.
The FDC’s Vice President for Northern Uganda, Kaps Fungaroo, has yet to comment on the party’s poor performance in the elections. However, analysts predict that the defeat may have far-reaching implications for the party’s national stature and its ability to challenge the ruling NRM in future elections.
