LIRA CITY, UGANDA — The battle for the Speakership of the 12th Parliament has taken a dramatic turn in Northern Uganda after supporters of Justice Minister Hon Norbert Mao launched the “Green in Yellow” campaign to unseat the incumbent, Rt. Hon. Anita Annet Among.
While gathering in Lira City on Saturday, April 11, 2026, the group—operating under the banner “Team Chairman Mao for Lango”—declared their unwavering support for Mao ahead of the May 2026 speakership elections.
‘Bedroom’ remark sparks Outrage:
The Mao’s supporters campaign slogan launch, follows a high-profile war of words at the NRM retreat in Kyankwanzi, where Hon Speaker Among used a “bedroom” metaphor to warn allied parties against eyeing the top legislative post.
Led by the Lira City Female Workers’ Representative, Hon. Sarah Awor Angweri, the group denounced Among’s remarks as “vulgar” and “undignified”.
“We want Norbert Mao to be inside the bedroom, not outside,” the team chanted, referencing Mao’s stinging rejoinder that only the “head of the family” (H.E. President Museveni) decides who can be invited appointed or not as per tge IPOD agreement.
Lango Leaders Urged to Vote Mao:
Hon. Angweri, who is also the chief coordinator of the “Green in Yellow” movement, called on Lango MPs to remain united and support Mao for the sake of regional service delivery.
“It is time to make Mao shine for the benefit of Uganda. We are rallying 24/7 and cautioning our MPs to vote wisely for a leader with a clear track record,” she said.
The group also urged President Museveni to intervene and consider reassinging Among to a different role, such as the Ministry of East African Affairs, rather than the Speakership.
‘Eloquent and Not Corrupt’:
Other supporters, including Aluma Elly and Caroline Akullu, described Mao as an eloquent, disciplined leader who represents national reconciliation. They argued that the 12th Parliament requires a speaker of Mao’s calibre to address entrenched corruption and maintain decorum in the House.

When contacted by our reporter to comment on the new wave of Mao’s supporters in Lango, Rt. Hon. Speaker Annet Anita Among did not answer our repeated phone calls.
The campaign has already gained visual momentum, with the group printing several T-shirts bearing the “Team Chairman Mao” and “Green in Yellow” slogans. While the NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) earlier endorsed Among and Deputy Speaker Thomas Tayebwa, the emergence of the “Mao Factor” in Lango suggests a shifting political direction ahead of the May 2026 speakership elections approach.
Five people have so far expressed interest in the speakership race.
