Govt to Issue 2,000 Free Land Titles to Obongi Residents

By Our Reporter
OBONGI, UGANDA – The Government has kicked off the process of issuing 2,000 free land titles to residents of Obongi district in a bid to curb land grabbing and enhance tenure security.
The initiative, targeting the sub-counties of Aliba and Gimara, will see households receive Customary Certificates of Ownership (CCOs) at no cost.
A technical team from the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, led by Ms. Rose Bako, is already on the ground to spearhead the registration and boundary opening process.
Speaking during a sensitization workshop organized in collaboration with Makerere University’s Department of Physical Planning, the Obongi Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, hailed the move as a shield for the vulnerable.
“Land is our people’s most valuable asset, but without documentation, many remain vulnerable to disputes and exploitation. This program will provide legal recognition and restore confidence among families,” Hashaka said.
The RDC noted that the 2,000 titles represent a significant milestone in local development, as secure land ownership acts as a foundation for investment and improved agricultural productivity.
He warned against corruption and misinformation, urging local leaders to ensure the exercise remains transparent.
“I call upon all stakeholders to ensure fairness. Let this program be free from conflicts. We must ensure no eligible household is left behind,” he added.
The exercise comes at a time when the government is intensifying efforts to document customary land across Northern and West Nile regions to minimize communal land conflicts.
Ms. Rose Bako, representing the Commissioner for Land Registration, encouraged residents to cooperate with the surveyors and provide accurate information to avoid future litigation.

The event was also attended by the Assistant RDC, Mr. Robert Obina Komakech, district technical officers, and local council leaders.
