KAMPALA, UGANDA– May 1, 2026: As Uganda joins the rest of the world to commemorate International Labour Day 2026, the Member of Parliament for Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Hon. Acan Joyce Okeny, has called for a renewed commitment toward economic inclusion and the fulfillment of government pledges for the PWD community.
In a powerful Labour Day address to our reporter, Hon. Acan Okeny who is returning to the 12th Parliament—hailed the resilience of PWDs, describing them as an integral part of the nation’s “backbone” and essential drivers of the country’s wealth creation agenda.
Hon. Acan congratulated he diverse workforce across Uganda, noting that the spirit of hard work knows no physical boundaries.
“From our farmers in the gardens to teachers in classrooms, traders, and health workers—you are the backbone of our nation,” she stated. “Today, we join the rest of the world to celebrate hard work, resilience, and sacrifice.”
Despite the progress made, the legislator emphasized that more must be done to bridge the gap between policy and practice. She made a passionate plea to employers and society to end discrimination in the workplace.
“It is my prayer that you involve PWDs in all categories of work in our society,” she urged, adding that the journey toward wealth creation must be inclusive of all Ugandans, regardless of ability.
Tracking Pledges
Looking ahead, Hon. Acan noted that her office is focused on following up on presidential and government pledges made to PWDs. She outlined that addressing the challenges facing the disability community is a priority as the country enters the new month of May.
“This year, we are highlighting our achievements as PWDs so far and outlining how we’ll address the gaps in following up pledges and challenges facing us as we work towards wealth creation and socio-economic transformation,” she added.
Closing her message with a call for unity, Hon. Acan wished all PWDs and the wider Ugandan workforce a month of renewed strength.
“May this Labour Day celebration bring renewed strength, blessings, and progress to every home of each of the PWDs. Thank you for your trust. We move forward together.” Hon. Joyce Okeny concluded.
