KAMPALA, UGANDA – The Government Chief Whip and Chairperson of the NRM Parliamentary Caucus, Hon. Denis Hamson Obua, has moved to allay fears regarding the harmonised Protection of Sovereignty Bill, clarifying that the proposed law will not hinder economic growth or religious support.
In a move to provide clarity on the legislative piece, Hon. Obua emphasized that the Bill is strictly a safeguard for Uganda’s political independence and does not target legitimate financial flows that benefit the citizenry.
—nor will it block support directed toward religious bodies across the country.
Defending Article 1:
According to Hon. Obua, the primary intent of the Bill is to insulate Uganda’s internal governance from external manipulation.
“It is intended to regulate foreign interference in Uganda’s governance, politics, and policy-making, and to uphold our sovereignty under Article 1 of the Constitution,” Obua stated.
