Police in Kole District are investigating the deaths of a husband and wife in Te-ibule Cell, Bala Town Council, in what appears to be a case of murder followed by suicide.
The incident was reported to police by Omara Jackson, 42, the LC1 Chairperson of Te-ibule Cell, Western Ward B, Bala Town Council.
The dead have been identified as Atenge Sam, 45, and Atim Joan, 39. Both were peasant farmers and residents of Te-ibule Cell. Police say the two had been cohabiting for some time.
According to North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the incident happened on June 1, 2026 at around 1:00am at the couple’s home.It is alleged that the pair had a misunderstanding that turned into a fight. During the altercation, Atenge Sam picked up a panga and cut his wife Atim Joan, killing her on the spot. After realizing she was dead, he hanged himself inside the house. The District Scene of Crime Officer and a team from the homicide squad visited and documented the scene. Both bodies were taken to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary for postmortem.
Police recovered a panga and a rope from the house as exhibits. Statements from relevant witnesses have been recorded.
SP Okema described the incident as sad and barbaric. He noted that such violence is becoming common among married couples.
“We strongly condemn these acts. We call upon family heads, clan leaders and religious leaders to step in and offer counselling. Couples should learn to express their grievances freely and seek help before matters get out of hand,” Okema said.
