Christians in West Nile have received the sculpture of the Virgin Mary from Kibeho, Rwanda — the site where the Blessed Mother is believed to have appeared to three schoolgirls in 1981.
Mrs Mary Bashasha, a Ugandan Catholic evangelist, is leading the tour with the sculpture, preaching the message of prayer, faith and repentance. She is currently ministering in the West Nile region.
The Kibeho Story
In November 1981, the Virgin Mary, under the title Nyina wa Jambo — “Mother of the Word” — appeared to three students at Kibeho College in southern Rwanda: Alphonsine Mumureke, Nathalie Mukamazimpaka, and Marie Claire Mukangango.
The apparitions, later approved by the Catholic Church, warned of prayer, conversion, and impending tragedy. About 13 years later, Rwanda descended into the 1994 genocide in which Marie Claire Mukangango was killed.
Today, Kibeho is a major pilgrimage site in southwestern Rwanda, attracting thousands seeking blessings and healing.
Mrs Bashasha says she was appointed to continue the mission of Marie Claire Mukangango. She is now moving across Uganda with the Kibeho sculpture.
Last week, she was at St Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Obongi District, where she spoke about the importance of praying the Seven Sorrows of the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
During Mass, presided over by Rev Fr David Andama and attended by Obongi RDC Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, Bashasha urged Ugandans to turn to God through prayer.
The Seven Sorrows
She explained that the Seven Sorrows of Mary are:
- The Prophecy of Simeon on the life and death of Jesus Christ
- The Flight into Egypt to save Jesus from King Herod
- The Loss of the Child Jesus in the Temple
- Mary meeting Jesus carrying the Cross
- Mary standing at the Crucifixion of Jesus
- Mary receiving the lifeless body of Jesus from the Cross
- Mary witnessing the burial of Jesus
“Mother Mary calls us to repentance, deep prayer, and unwavering faith,” Bashasha told the congregation.
During mass Rev Fr Andama David informed christians in Obongi that the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Obongi Catholic Parish have been postponed due to the Ebola virus.
Father Andama appealed to all Ugandans to stop shaking hands and to observe all the SOPs against Ebola.
