Hundreds of Christians in Obongi District marked this year’s Martyrs’ Day with a special mass at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, Obongi Catholic Parish.
The main celebrant, Rev. Fr. Ayiga Raphael, praised the Uganda Martyrs for dying for the truth and sacrificing their lives to defend Christianity.
“Live Like the Martyrs”
Rev. Fr. Ayiga challenged Christians to copy the good example of the Martyrs by living Godly lives and standing firm in faith.
“Be ready to sacrifice for what is right, just as Jesus Christ and the Uganda Martyrs did,” he told the congregation.
During the mass, the St. Francis Choir led the faithful in singing hymns that praised the courage and faith of the Martyrs who were killed for defending God.
Leaders Join Prayers
The special mass was attended by Obongi Resident District Commissioner Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka and a retired Assistant Superintendent of Prisons.
Rev. Fr. Ayiga also appealed to Ugandans to observe all Standard Operating Procedures in the fight against Ebola. He urged Christians to avoid handshakes and report any suspicious cases to health authorities immediately.
“Celebrating the Martyrs means protecting life. Let us guard our communities from Ebola by following the guidelines,” he said.
Christians later held prayers for the country, asking for God’s protection against disease and for strength to uphold Christian values.
