One killed, three injured as police shoot to rescue teacher from mob in Kole.

KOLE, UGANDA: Police in Kole District are investigating a fatal shooting that left one person dead and three others injured after a mob attacked officers who had gone to rescue a primary school teacher accused of defilement.
The incident occurred on Monday, 18th August 2026 at around 10:00pm at Lwala Trading Centre, Lwala Parish, Ayer Sub-county in Kole District.
According to a statement issued by North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, police have opened a file GEF 010/2026 to investigate the shooting.
How it started
Preliminary findings indicate that at around 9:00pm, two unidentified men went to Abilonino Police Post and reported that Okello Otim Samuel, a teacher at Abilonino Demonstration Primary School, had been caught attempting to defile a pupil at the same school and was under mob attack.
Two officers who responded were overpowered by the mob and confined in the same house with the suspect.
The officers called for reinforcement from Kole Central Police Station. A team commanded by the Officer-in-Charge of the station responded, but upon arrival, the mob started pelting them with stones, seriously injuring No. 42249 Cpl Ojota Alfred, 54, attached to Kole CPS.
“In the process some bullets were discharged and stray bullets killed one person and injured two others,” SP Okema said.
Victims identified
The deceased was identified as Aluri Morris, 28, a resident of Lwala Trading Centre.
Those injured are:
- a 15 -year-old-pupil at Abilonino Primary School
- Obong Daniel, 23, a resident of Lwala
- Cpl Ojota Alfred, the police officer
All are receiving treatment in different health facilities.
The teacher was rescued together with the victim and is now in police custody charged with Aggravated Defilement and Aggravated Trafficking in Children.
Police also opened cases of unlawful wounding and malicious damage to a police vehicle.
Police condemn mob justice
The crime scene was visited and documented by a team comprising General Duties, Homicide squad and the District Scenes of Crime Officer headed by the District CID Officer.
The body of the deceased was conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary pending postmortem.
Police established that the teacher had attempted to defile Akullu Miriam, 14, a pupil at Abilonino Demonstration Primary School.
“This is a very unfortunate incident where on several occasions community members have attacked police officers on official duty. We condemn very strongly acts of violence while responding to cases,” SP Okema said.
He urged locals to apprehend and hand over suspects to police and cautioned public officials against abusing people under their care.
