LIRA: Police in Lira City West Division are investigating a suspected case of murder by mob that occurred on the night of August 24, 2026 in Obutuwelo A Cell, Ojwina Ward, Lira City West Division.
The deceased has been identified as Alany Gerald, 25, a resident of the same area.
According to North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesperson, SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the incident was reported to police by a concerned citizen.
Preliminary findings indicate that the deceased and others allegedly broke into a house in Obutuwelo A Cell while occupants were sleeping and stole household items.
Police say the group reportedly returned to the same home for more items, but the deceased was arrested by the homeowner as his colleagues fled. He was then beaten by family members before other community members joined in, killing him instantly. His body was later dumped in the middle of the road.
A team of police officers led by the Officer in Charge of the Station, together with Scene of Crime Officers (SOCO) and homicide detectives, responded to the scene.
The scene was processed and documented, statements recorded, and the body conveyed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital mortuary pending postmortem.
No arrests have been made, but efforts to apprehend suspects are ongoing.
Police have condemned mob justice and urged residents to hand over suspects to law enforcement for investigation and prosecution.
“It is quite unfortunate that members of the public have continued to take the law into their own hands. We appeal to community members to support police, not take the law into their hands,” SP Okema said.
