Thousands Gather At Kaunda Grounds As Gulu Hosts Major Home Coming Celebration of Rtd. Lt. Gen Otema Awany

GULU CITY – Thousands of people have already gathered at Kaunda Grounds in Gulu City for a major celebration underway today Friday 28th, August 2026.
The event has attracted diginitaries of political, cultural and security leaders from across Acholi, Lango West Nile and Karamoja sub-regions and high profile government officials at national level.
Hon. Minister Sam Engola, Minister Hon Beatrice Akello Akori GCW Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng, NRM vice chairperson Hon Denis Hamson Obua, Hon Former Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo, Mayor Gulu city commonly known as Gunya. Among the dignitaries present are Dr. Tanga Odoi EC NRM, Hon. Omach Jachan, Commissioner Modesta Auma Juliana, Aruu North MP Hon. Christopher Komakech, Hon. Gilbert Olanya, Tochi County MP Hon Peter Okot, WMP Phiobe Ayoo, Denis Amere Of Kitgum Municipality, Nwoya Woman MP Lanyero Christine Awany, Ojara Martin Mapenduzi, and Acholi Parliamentary Group Chairperson Hon. Catherine Lamwaka, Hon Odonga Otto and Minister Okello Oryem as well as Team Jie Kwanja from Karamoja Sub Region.
Several delegations from Kitgum, Lamwo, Pader, Agago, Gulu District, Omoro, Gulu City and Amuru are also in attendance.
The cultural institution is represented by the Paramount Chief of Acholi, Rwot David Onen Acana II, Rwot Martin Otinga Otto Yai of Ker Lamogi, Rwot Yusuf Adek of Pageya, Rwot Oywak of Ker Koyo, Rwot Komakech Richard, Rwot Onama Charles Pajimo of Kitgum, Rwot Ocaya Ben of Paicho, Rwot Ocaya of Koro chiefdom, Prime Minister Ker Alero Komakech Charles, and Rwot Collin Atiko of Patiko, among others.
Among the notable UPDF officers in the tent are Maj. Gen. Lakara, Maj. Gen. Otto Owili, Col. Omona Awany- uganda atache to Kenya among other senior officers.
