Mob Justice is Illegal, Gulu Deputy RDC Warns

GULU — The Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) of Gulu, Mr Cosmas James Okidi, has warned residents against mob justice, saying it is illegal to take the law into their own hands.
Mr Okidi made the remarks while addressing mourners during the burial of a 30-year-old youth who was killed by a mob in Awach Town Council, Gulu District.
The deceased was reportedly lynched after he was accused of stealing cassava belonging to the headteacher of Pagik Primary School.
“We must desist from taking laws into our own hands. We have the police and other relevant authorities to report to whenever a crime is committed,” Mr Okidi said.
He implored residents to embrace various government interventions aimed at fighting poverty at household level, noting that President Yoweri Museveni has initiated many programmes to improve livelihoods.
“The President has initiated many government projects to improve our wellbeing. Why can’t we utilise them?” he asked.
The Deputy RDC thanked the family of the deceased for remaining calm during the difficult time and urged other mourners to emulate their example.
