The political atmosphere in Apac District is heating up following the conclusion of nominations, with both NRM and UPC camps entering full campaign mode ahead of the 2026 general elections.
What was once a quiet district has now turned into a battleground for political dominance between four heavyweight contenders.
The Electoral Commission Returning Officer for Apac District, Omona Joseph, confirmed the closure of nominations on October 23, 2025, paving the way for one of the most competitive elections the district has witnessed in years.
Among those cleared are Hon. Betty Awor Engola, the incumbent Woman MP and NRM flagbearer; Susan Achola Engola of the UPC; Hon. Akora Maxwell Patrick Ebong, a prominent UPC legislator representing Apac Municipality; and Ocan Patrick, also known as Ocan Devine, an independent candidate and media entrepreneur.
Analysts say Apac’s political temperature is being driven by renewed rivalry between the ruling NRM and the UPC, a party with deep historical roots in the Lango sub-region.
Hon. Betty Awor Engola is counting on the NRM’s rural structures and government programs to retain her seat.
Her UPC counterpart, Achola Engola, has rallied a growing youth base in Maruzi North, where she recently addressed a major campaign launch organized by Okello Nelson Lemba.
In Apac Municipality, Hon. Akora Maxwell Patrick Ebong is expected to face a strong challenge from Ocan Devine, whose control of a local radio station gives him a strategic communication advantage.
Political observers predict that the race could redefine party influence in the district, especially given the growing number of undecided voters.
As campaigns gain momentum, residents are urging parties to conduct peaceful and issue-based contests that prioritize service delivery, unity, and development.
Religious leaders have also been called upon to guide candidates and their supporters in maintaining calm and discipline throughout the campaign period.
Nominations may be over, but the political drama in Apac is just beginning.
The district has now emerged as one of the most unpredictable arenas ahead of the 2026 general elections, where strategy and public trust are set to determine the next generation of leaders.
