LIRA CITY, UGANDA – The people of Angwetangwet ward in Lira City East Division ,was on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, jubilated as residents turned out to welcome Hon. Minister Betty Amongi Akena during her campaign for the upcoming 2026 General Elections. The Minister for Gender, Labour, and Social Development was met with a warm reception, with many attendees commending her manifesto, particularly its focus on youth skilling and women empowerment.

The campaign rally saw a strong presence from various UPC structures, including UPC flag bearer Hon. Ogwang Mike Veve, Santa Angela, and Hon. Ocen James Agipi, the Lira City East UPC flag bearer. Staunch supporters from across the political spectrum also joined the gathering, with notable figures such as Mike Adoko and Juke Joel, former NRM chairperson for Gombola Lira, in attendance, alongside numerous community members. The sheer number of people who gathered underscored the significant interest in Minister Amongi’s vision for the constituency.

During her address, Minister Amongi expressed confidence in her electoral prospects, citing a survey that indicated an “82 percent win.” She proceeded to elaborate on key components of her manifesto, highlighting initiatives aimed at tangible community benefit. Among these was a health insurance card to be distributed, reportedly containing UGX 2 million, accessible to pregnant mothers. Santa Angela is slated to coordinate the process, of insuarence with a UGX 36,000 fee stipulated for its activation. For the youth under 35, she announced a loan program to be disbursed at a competitive 5 percent interest rate.

Minister Amongi also took the opportunity to point to her past achievements, mentioning the construction of the Akwiyaworo bridge which she stated cost UGX 850 million. She alluded to an obstruction she faced, however, with the Lira City authority reportedly writing a letter to halt further road rehabilitation efforts by herself and even MP Obong Eyit.”
Urging the residents of Angwetangwet to cast their votes for her on January 15, 2026, Minister Amongi emphasized her commitment to officially assume office and implement her agenda without fear or favour. She further detailed a “volunteer job matching scheme” for graduates, announcing that agreements have been signed with various companies to facilitate job creation.

The campaign event concluded with a jubilation abd community appreciation. A women’s group from Angwetangwet presented Minister Amongi with a gift of bananas and several household items, a gesture reflecting the positive reception to her message and promises.
