UPC’s Hon. Amongi Betty pledges new home for Amuca, recalling childhood roots.

In a heartfelt ceremony at Amuca Primary School on Friday, Hon. Betty Amongi, the UPC‑backed Woman MP candidate and current Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development, announced plans to construct a new residential home in the Amuca ward of Lira City. Hon. Amongi said, it is a tribute to the community that shaped her childhood and a concrete promise to invest in the area’s future.
“I grew up in Amuca. My parents taught at the primary school, and the people here gave me the values that guide my public service today,” Amongi told a gathering of local leaders, elders and residents. “Building this home is my way of giving back to the place that raised me.”
Amongi, who is contesting for the position of Lira Woman MP parliamentary seat , has visited Amuca three times since announcing her candidacy.She highlighted the constitutional requirement that Ugandan leaders face elections every five years, urging voters to consider continuity and accountability when they head to the polls later this year.
“Our constitution guarantees a regular, five‑year electoral cycle, which is the cornerstone of our democracy. It allows us to assess performance and make choices that reflect the people’s aspirations,” she explained.

The minister outline her manifesto such as ; affordable school fees loan , youth empowerment and health insuarence card for the electorate of Lira city. She announced that, alongside the residential home construction, the people of Amuca and other parts of Lira city will continue to receive seed stock for maize, soybeans, sunflower and coffeeamong others.
In a symbolic gesture, community members presented Amongi with various gifts such as maize, bananas, chickens, cooking pots, and brooms, underscoring the close relationship between the electorate and their prospective hopeful representative in the 12th parliament.

Accompanying the minister was Hon. MP Shedrick Vincent Ebong Eyit, a senior UPC figure who has long supported the community with bursary. Eyit praised the people of Amuca for electi g him in the 11th parliament promising to do more “a tangible sign of commitment to grassroots development” and urged the crowd to rally behind the UPC candidates on the 15th January, 2026 general elections.

“When leaders remember where they come from, they can better serve those they lead,” Eyit said. “This home will not only provide shelter but also stand as a beacon of progress for Amuca.”
Local officials say the construction will create temporary jobs for masons, carpenters and suppliers, while the forthcoming agricultural inputs are expected to boost yields and household incomes.
As Lira City gears up for the 2026 general elections, Amongi’s Amuca pledge adds to a string of development promises circulating across the city.
