By Solomon Okabo
KWANIA, UGANDA: At least 130 supporters of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party in Agwa Parish, Akali Sub-County in Kwania District have crossed to Uganda People’s Congress-UPC as defections rock political parties ahead of 2026 general election.

Among the 130 defectors, include 84 from Apidyang B village, 13 from Omenya and 33 from Barocao A and Barocao B Villages.
The group which was led by Ogora Clan Chief “Rwot” in charge Kwania West Joel Otoo popularly known as Otoo Apidyang crossed during the UPC’s campaign rally in Agwa Parish on Thursday.
The converts were welcomed by Kwania District Woman MP Hon. Kenny Auma and Bob Okae the Kwania North County Member of Parliament, both UPC diehards amidst ululations from UPC supporters.

Defectors speak out
Joel Otoo Apidyang, Ogora clan chief who is a staunch NRM mobilizer attributed their defection to MP Bob Okae and Kenny Auma’s great achievement.
“We are tired of NRM unfulfilled promises. As the clan chief of Ogora I have witnessed a lot of support from MP Okae and Auma. The road you are seeing was constructed by Okae. My message to the Ogora Clan, we are not voting the clan head, we are electing Member of Parliament so I request you to reject all differences, whether tribal or religious and vote for a leader not comedians,”he said.

The defection of Ogora Clan Chief and his members may cast a dark cloud in the NRM camp especially given the fact that Agwa Parish is dominated by Ogora, a prominent clan in Lango, James Ongu Tar’s clan, NRM flag bearer and a rival to Kwania North incumbent Member of Parliament Bob Okae.
Addressing an electrified crowd of supporters during the same rally, Bob Okae Kwania North County MP said the defection by the NRM supporters will strengthen the party at the grassroot.
“During my tenure as Member of Parliament, I made some electricity and water reached all corners of the Constituency. I procured an ambulance and plastic chairs for the community. I encourage you to vote me back to Parliament so that I continue helping you especially the vocational institution for the youth and lobby for other vibrant projects,”he said.
Kenny Auma, Kwania District Woman Member of Parliament, said while in Parliament she supported the teenagers mothers through Skilling Initiative, bought an ambulance for the community among other key achievements, challenging her opponents to sell their agenda to the electorates instead of trading propaganda.
“As Member of Parliament I supported the teenage mothers who were impregnated during Covid-19 lockdown. Together with Bob Okae we shall open vocation school for school dropouts especially the boy child. On the January 15, 2026 vote for Auma and Okae,”she said.
Campaign promises
Patrick Ogwang Obia, UPC flag bearer for Kwania District LCV Chairperson’s race pledged to rehabilitate Apidyang to Abongomola trading center road, Omenya to Agolowelo road and open more new roads in the area once elected.
Ogwang urged voters in Akali Sub County to vote for him and pledged to walk the talk and use bottom up approach metholody in order to improve on service delivery in the district.
