OBONGI, UGANDA – DECEMBER 14, 2025: In a significant breakthrough, a gun used by Sudanese refugees to rob two businesses in Keguru village, Palorinya subcounty, Obongi district, has been recovered by local residents and security forces. The robbery, which occurred on November 28, 2025, resulted in the theft of over 8 million shillings.
According to reports from Obongi Resident District commissioner ( RDC) ,Hasaka Samuel Mpimbaza, four Sudanese refugees used the gun to rob Iga and Family Electronics, owned by Mr. Iga Fred, making off with over 3.3 million shillings from his mobile money business. The thugs also targeted a neighboring merchandise shop, robbing over 4 million shillings after shooting in the air to intimidate the owners.
Following the incident, police in Obongi, with the assistance of local residents, arrested one of the suspects, and a case was opened at the police station (vide 06/28/11/2025).
In a surprising twist, the gun was recovered today by a 9-year-old refugee who was hunting for rats in a garden. The young boy stumbled upon the hidden gun, which was then handed over to the authorities.
The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Obongi, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, praised the vigilance of the Wanahinchi or local residents in recovering the gun. “I would like to thank the members of the public for their security consciousness and for reporting this matter to the authorities,” Hashaka said. “This is a clear example of how community involvement can help fight insecurity.”
Hashaka also called on the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the authorities, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the community and security forces in maintaining law and order.
The recovery of the gun is a significant achievement in the investigation into the robbery, and it is expected to lead to further arrests and prosecution of the perpetrators. The incident highlights the need for continued security awareness and community engagement in preventing and combating crime in the region.
