Gopele Seed Secondary School 95% Complete, Set for 2026 Opening – Engineer Assures District Leaders
Obongi, Uganda – January 28, 2026: Engineer Stewart Matege, the site engineer overseeing the construction of Gopele Seed Secondary School in Obongi District, has assured district leaders that the multi-billion-shilling project will be fully completed and ready for operation ahead of the first term of the 2026 academic year, set to begin on February 10, 2026.
Engineer Matege made the assurance during a site inspection and progress briefing held on Friday at the school construction site in Gimara Sub-County. The visit was led by Obongi Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, alongside Assistant Resident District Commissioner Komakech Robert and the District Education Officer (DEO) Felix Idraku.
The Gopele Seed Secondary School, a flagship education project worth 3 billion Ugandan shillings, was initiated by the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government as part of its commitment to expanding access to quality secondary education in Uganda’s underserved regions. According to Engineer Matege, the construction is now at over 95% completion, with only minor finishing works remaining.
“We are on schedule,” Engineer Matege affirmed during the briefing. “The classrooms, administrative blocks, laboratories, staff housing, and student hostels are nearly complete. Our team is now focusing on internal fittings, painting, and the final landscaping. We expect all works to be wrapped up by the end of January 2026, allowing ample time for furniture installation and handover before the start of term.”
RDC Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka commended the construction team for the steady progress and urged them to maintain quality standards while adhering to the timeline. “This school will be a game-changer for the people of Obongi,” he said. “We have witnessed remarkable transformation on this site, and we are confident that come February, students will walk into a fully equipped, modern learning environment.”
The school is expected to serve hundreds of students from Gimara and surrounding sub-counties, alleviating the current pressure on existing secondary schools, some of which operate under congested conditions. As a government “seed school,” Gopele will offer both O-Level and A-Level education, with specialized facilities in science, technology, and vocational training.
District Education Officer Felix Idraku revealed that recruitment of teaching and non-teaching staff is already underway, with placements expected to be finalized by mid-January. “We are not only building classrooms — we are building hope and opportunity,” Idraku said. “When doors open in February, everything will be in place to offer a full academic schedule from day one.”
Local community leaders and parents have expressed excitement over the imminent opening of the school, praising the government for prioritizing education in the region.
Gopele Seed Secondary School is set to become a model institution in the West Nile region, symbolizing the government’s ongoing investment in rural education infrastructure and national development.
