Several Injured After Building Collapse at FUFA Drum Match in Lira city
LIRA ,UGANDA— March 30, 2026: Several football fans were injured on Sunday 29th , March 2026 after part of a building collapsed during a FUFA Drum match between Lango and Teso provinces at Uganda Technical College in Lira City.
The incident occurred on March 29, 2026, during the second half of the match, which had attracted an estimated crowd of more than 30,000 spectators from the Lango, Acholi, and Teso sub-regions.
According to police, the situation unfolded after fans overwhelmed ticketing officials at the venue, forcing them to retreat toward verification points as the crowd surged.
In an attempt to get a better view of the game, some spectators climbed onto the roof of an old classroom block and nearby trees.
Trouble started in the 79th minute when Lango Province scored against Teso Province, triggering excitement among supporters. Moments later, part of the old classroom structure gave way, injuring several people.
Police officers deployed at the venue quickly responded and coordinated the evacuation of the injured. The victims were rushed to Lira Regional Referral Hospital by ambulance.
North Kyoga Region Police spokesperson, Patrick Jimmy Okema, said the victims sustained injuries including fractures to the arms and legs, as well as dental injuries.
The injured were identified as Ouni Emmanuel, 23; Okello Dan, 22; Ogwal Sam, 24; all residents of Lira City; Emitu Michael, 25; Ayaka Eliza, 27; and Elotu John, 30, all from Soroti District.
Two other victims, whose identities were not immediately established, were referred to Gulu Regional Referral Hospital for further treatment.
Police have since opened a case of accidental injury due to a building collapse at Lira City East Police Division. Investigations into the exact cause of the incident are ongoing.
Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution while attending crowded events and warned against climbing unsafe structures.
