LUWERO, UGANDA: The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Obongi, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, has called upon university students from the West Nile region to play an active role in monitoring government projects and fighting corruption in their home districts.
Speaking as the chief guest during the handover ceremony of the Kampala University West Nile Students Association (KUWESA) at the Luwero campus, Hashaka noted that student involvement is crucial for the region’s economic transformation.

The RDC expressed concern that despite the billions of shillings sent by the government to West Nile districts for wealth creation and poverty alleviation, poverty levels remain high. He attributed this to the misappropriation of funds and poor service delivery.
“I advise you to use your networks back home to gather information on how funds are being utilized. Report cases of bad service delivery to the RDCs’ offices so that we can take action,” Hashaka urged the students.
Focus on Education
Addressing the education sector, Hashaka lamented the high dropout rates in the region, noting that nearly 70% of pupils leave school before completing Primary Seven. He cited rampant defilement and children opting for fishing over studies as the primary causes of this trend.
He encouraged the students to sensitize their communities on the importance of education and to be at the forefront of reporting defilement cases to the police. He further suggested that the association creates a desk specifically dedicated to handling education matters in West Nile.
Leadership Transition
The ceremony, attended by the KUWESA patron Mr. Vuzzi Pasikale, saw the outgoing president, Mr. Ronald Oromchan, hand over leadership to the incoming president, Mr. Sahadi Izaruku.
Hashaka commended the students for forming the association, stating that it should serve as a platform for both academic support and social development.

The handover ceremony was attended by both the patron Kampala University west Nile students association Mr.Vuzzi Pasikale and the patron Kampala University Acholi students association Mr Peter Latigo who challenged the students to concentrate on their studies for a bright future.
