Lira,Uganda-June 19, 2026: A man was killed and his wife critically injured after an armed attack at their home in Lira City early Thursday morning.
The attack happened at about 2:30am in Opelo Cell, Boroboro West Ward, Lira City East Division.
The deseased Engol Alex,46, died from deep panga cuts to the head and body. His wife, survived with severe head injuries and is admitted to Lira Regional Referral Hospital.
Police arrested Okethi Rex, 32, and Sophia Olwit, 65, both residents of Opelo Cell
North Kyoga Regional Police Spokesman SP Patrick Jimmy Okema said Teddy Olwit called a relative, Abira Holiver, minutes after the attack saying they had been cut by a man with a panga.
Abira alerted Olwit Max, the deceased’s brother, who rushed to the scene with neighbours. They found the couple lying in a pool of blood in their compound.
Police were tipped off at 4:48am and cordoned off the scene. By then, Okethi Rex had already taken the victims to hospital in a silver Toyota Axio, registration UAX 416S.
Okema said investigations are ongoing and the motive is not yet known. The scene remains secured.
A police K9 unit tracked and arrested him. Sophia Olwit was also taken into custody.
