OBONGI TO GET ELECTRICITY AS GOVERNMENT DELIVERS ON NRM PLEDGE.

OBONGI, UGANDA: Obongi District is set to be connected to the national power grid, with assessment teams already on ground to identify areas for power line installation.
The development was announced during a meeting between officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and Obongi district leaders at the district headquarters.
“A promise delivered”
The Resident District Commissioner of Obongi, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, commended H.E President Yoweri Museveni and the NRM Government for fulfilling the pledge to extend electricity to Obongi.
“We thank the President and the NRM government for delivering on this commitment to the people of Obongi,” Hashaka said.
He urged the Ministry team, consultants and bidders to ensure transparency and proper coordination for the success of the project in Obongi and other parts of West Nile.
The Ministry team was led by Eng. Douglas Twinamatsiko, a Senior Consulting Engineer under the Electricity Access Scale-Up Project.
Eng. Twinamatsiko introduced consultants and bidders currently in Obongi and West Nile to carry out assessments for the installation of power lines.
Responding to concerns by District Chairperson Haji Abibu Buga Kemis Awadi on connecting all parts of Obongi, Eng. Twinamatsiko said the district will benefit from two projects:
- The Electricity Access Scale-Up Project – funded by the Government of Uganda and the World Bank
- The GET Access Project – funded by the Government of Germany through KfW and the Government of Uganda.
“The connection of electricity to Obongi is now at an advanced stage,” Eng. Twinamatsiko told leaders.
Assessment teams flagged off
The RDC later flagged off the team of Ministry officials to begin assessment and inspection in different parts of Obongi.
Leaders welcomed the move, saying electricity will improve service delivery in health centers, schools and boost businesses in the district.
Obongi District will finally get connected to the national grid under two government projects. RDC Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka thanked President Museveni for fulfilling the NRM manifesto pledge.
