One killed in suspected mob action in Oyam.

OYAM, UGANDA–Police in Oyam District are investigating a suspected case of murder by mob action in which a 20-year-old man was beaten to death over allegations of theft.
The incident occurred on Monday, 20th July 2026 at about 4:00am at Acimi “B” Village, Acimi Parish, Myene Sub-county, according to SP Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Police Spokesperson for North Kyoga Region.
The deceased has been identified as Ogoga Moses, a resident of Olwarut Village, Myene Parish, Myene Sub-county.
According to police, Ogoga allegedly broke into the kitchen of Atoo Michael at Acimi “B” Village and stole two chickens. Atoo reportedly heard him, armed himself with an axe, and chased the suspect. He caught up with Ogoga a short distance away, assaulted him, and raised an alarm.
Okema said neighbors including Opio Amos, Emor Alfred, Ocen and others responded and allegedly joined in assaulting Ogoga, leading to his death.
“Atoo Michael later called the area LCI Chairperson, Ejang Agnes, 44, and informed her of the incident. The chairperson reported the matter to Myene Sub-county Police Station and inquiries commenced,” Okema said.
Investigations underway
A case of murder by mob action was registered at Myene Sub-county Police Station. Statements have been recorded from the reporter and other witnesses.
The District CID, together with the Scene of Crime Office [SOCO], visited and processed the scene. The body of the deceased was conveyed to Anyeke HC IV mortuary pending a postmortem examination.
Police said the suspects have been identified and urged them to report to the nearest police station to aid investigations. Arrangements are also underway to record more witness statements and effect arrests.
Okema condemned mob justice, noting that theft cases continue to provoke community retaliation.
“It is really a very unfortunate incident. We appeal to members of the public to apprehend suspected criminals and hand them over to police for investigation and possible prosecution in courts of law instead of taking the law into their own hands,” he said.
