Deputy Resident District Commissioner (DRDC) Mathias Lutwama has stepped up his anti-corruption campaign in Alebtong District after ordering the arrest of an NRM official accused of allegedly diverting Sh14.2 million meant for party flag bearers.
The suspect, Sam Otiti, the NRM Chairperson for Aloi Town Council, is accused of withholding funds intended to facilitate party leaders and candidates preparing for the upcoming Women Council and Local Council I elections.
The matter came to light after several NRM flag bearers petitioned the DRDC, alleging that the facilitation money they received had been heavily reduced without explanation.
According to Lutwama, Otiti was summoned to appear before an NRM baraza, where he reportedly acknowledged the complaints and undertook to refund the money to the affected beneficiaries.
However, the DRDC said the suspect later switched off his phone and allegedly went into hiding, prompting authorities to order his arrest.
Police later apprehended Otiti and detained him at Aloi Police Station, where a case was registered under SD Ref. 13/22/07/2026. Investigations into the alleged theft are underway.
Lutwama said the action sends a clear message that district leaders will not tolerate corruption or the misappropriation of funds intended for political activities and public programmes.
The disputed funds were reportedly allocated to facilitate NRM flag bearers ahead of the Women Council elections on July 23 and LC1 Chairperson elections on July 28, 2026.
Police had not released an official statement by press time, while the suspect had not responded to the allegations. He remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty by a court of law.
