45 Learners graduate from New Covenant Church skilling program in Lira City.

LIRA CITY–UGANDA: Forty-five (45) Learners have graduated from a community skilling program organized by New Covenant Community Church in Kakoge Ward, Lira City West Division.
The training, held from 10th to 14th August 2026, equipped participants with practical skills in about 28 different skilling programs such as; making liquid soap, shampoo, shower gel, hair conditioner, craft shoes, bags, mats, scarves, bangles, necklaces, earrings, and wedding cakes, among 28 different products. It also included training in Business and Financial Management.

Focus on economic empowerment:
Rev. Dr. Nyang Francis of New Covenant Community Church located in Lira City said the church’s main aim is to empower women to be self-reliant.

He noted that the church, established in Lira in 2009, is committed to vocational training and promised to register the products with UNBS for quality testing.


Skills Trainer Col. Ocakacon Extends global experience:
Col. Isaac Ocakacon and Mrs Evelyn Ocakacon were the lead trainers.
Col. Ocakacon who is also a vibrant UPDF officer, said that he acquired the skills during military training in Germany and that the Ministry of Internal Affairs later gave him the opportunity to train communities through churches for economic empowerment.





“I have another trainer, my son. If I get busy in the army, he takes over from me. We have done this in Kenya, Rwanda and Eritrea, so it is a global thing,” Col. Ocakacon said.

Lira City RCC Lawrence Emmy Egole, applauded Gov’t for vocational training who was the chief guest, applauded Rev. Dr. Francis for initiating the skilling program hence it advocates for skilling just like presidential skilling hub.
Mr. Lawrence Egole said vocational education is now more beneficial compared to university studies.
“Things are changing. Vocational education is more beneficial compared to long time study up to university,” RCC Egole said.
