Lira City Marks National Cleaning Day With Massive Turnout

LIRA CITY– Lira City on Saturday, August 29, 2026, joined the rest of the country to commemorate National Cleaning Day.
The exercise was commanded by the Lira City Environment and Natural Resource Officer, Mr. Otika Leonard.
On behalf of His Worship the Mayor, Hon. Sam Atul, and the Town Clerk, Otika thanked residents of Ayago, Burlobo, Ojwina and Central Divisions, including market vendors, boda boda riders, students and the business community, who turned up in large numbers from 7:00 a.m. to clean the city.
He said the exercise was organised by Lira City Council with technical guidance from NEMA, in partnership with the Office of the Prime Minister, Ministry of Water and Environment, and Ministry of Health.
According to Otika, the achievements of the day included desilting drainages to prevent flooding, collecting and properly disposing of garbage in all cells, and sensitizing households on waste separation and the 3Rs – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
Otika called upon every household to maintain cleanliness beyond the day.
“Let us make cleaning a daily habit, not a monthly event. A clean environment prevents cholera, malaria and other diseases,” he said.
He reminded residents that National Cleaning Day will be observed every last Saturday of the month, with the next exercise scheduled for September 27, 2026.
He thanked the Mayor for his leadership, NEMA for technical support and all partners for their participation.
“Together for a Cleaner Lira City,” Otika said.
