ALEBTONG — The community of Alebtong has unanimously welcomed the establishment of a Cattle Holding Ground in the district.
The project is courtesy of the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) under the Uganda Climate Smart Agriculture Transformation Project (UCSATP).
The holding ground will be located at the boundary of Aloi Town Council and Awei Sub-county, on MAAIF land currently occupied by Awei Prison Farm.
The facility will occupy between 100 and 250 acres and will have capacity to hold 200 to 400 heads of cattle. Awei Prison Farm sits on 2,700 acres.
It should be recalled that in the 1980s, the area served as a cattle holding ground in proximity to the Aloi railway station.
The community is excited about the project, saying it will boost cattle trade, which is now being supported by the Parish Development Model (PDM) and the Cattle Restocking Programme towards socio-economic transformation.
The day-long activity, which started with a boardroom induction of district technical, political and security staff and ended with community engagement, was attended by the Resident District Commissioner (RDC), the LC5 Chairperson, the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) and Heads of Departments, besides MAAIF officials.
